The Batmobile was a Ford

The original Batmobile was designed and built in three weeks and was based on a Ford concept car, the Lincoln Futura.

The Batmobile is every kid’s dream, to be like Batman, ride that awesome Batbike and drive the Batmobile.  Not to mention Cat Women (puuurr.)

In a car garage in North Hollywood, you will come across two legends in the automotive industry.  The original car from the 1960’s Batman TV show and the creator, George Barris, 85.

Barris, the self-proclaimed “King of Kustomizers.”  He is the brains behind some of the most memorable TV and movie cars such as the DeLorean in Back to the Future, the A-Team van and KITT Trans Am from Knight Rider but his most famous car will always be the Batmobile.

Barris said “I wasn’t really aware of Batman before making the car.  I knew the comic books, I guess, but had no idea it was going to turn in to such a big thing.”

Barris was given just three weeks to come up with a concept and go on to build it by ABC Studios.  He said “The only idea they had was to cut out a bat face and stick it on the front of a Lincoln.  Ridiculous!”

He had a long relationship with Ford, and just so happened to own the Lincoln Futura, an over-long concept car with bubble windows which was hand built in Italy.  This became the base for the Batmobile.

Who would have thought that the Batmobile was a Ford?!  I didn’t know.  Although you can’t buy a Batmobile at your local Ford dealer, you can buy plenty of new and used Ford so go down to your local dealer today and find your very own Batmobile.
