Back when your parents were young when people imagined the future they imagined things like personal robots, pills for food and flying automobiles. These days we’re a bit more realistic with our predictions but some mind-blowing technology is soon to become a reality.
We already have cars who more or less parallel park themselves, radar controlled cruise control that brakes to a halt when it registers a traffic jam ahead, road sing recognitions and lane-keeping assist.
Now, companies such as Bosch involved in the technological improvements of car features are working on things like a self-driven car. They predict that with a combination of automatic cruise control and lane keeping support the potential for long periods of unassisted driving on the motorway is growing ever closer. But this kind of technology costs and a vehicle able to ‘drive itself’ so to speak need both a lot of sensors fitted and also some clever software. Industry experts claim that this kind of technology probably is about 10 years away.
Until this technology is available you can enjoy cars with features such as automatic parking where sensors on the car takes into account the actual situation and with the driver using the pedals, takes control of the steering wheel and guides the car into the available spot. Vauxhall, Lexus and Toyota are manufacturers that now offer this technology on their new cars. Another features available from manufacturers such as Ford is traffic sign recognition where a front-mounted camera scans the road ahead and displays things such as speed limits on the dash. At Ford Trowbridge they should be able to show you how this and other features included in Fords Driver Assistance Pack works on the road.
