What a car service actually involves

When newspapers run articles itemising how your life is spent on certain activities; it tends gets you thinking more about the things you don’t like doing, more than what you do. These surveys politely let you know that on average you spend eleven years in the toilet or 15 years eating. It is dreadful to think about how much time and money, you spend on getting your car serviced. Sitting on a hard bench in an office similar in size to a prison cell on a freezing cold Saturday morning will not be on anyone’s list of top ten things to do before you die. However, just like getting an MOT, it is imperative that a car is serviced regularly.

When it comes to car servicing you should follow your manufacturers’ guidelines on how long your car can go between services. This will improve the longevity of your vehicle and make breakdowns less likely, but not completely avoidable. OK, so we know we when to have our car serviced, but what do mechanics actually do when they service a car? Here are the main things that mechanics are checking when servicing a vehicle:

Fluid levels

Fluid level checks for the brake, steering and coolant systems are a vital part of any service. The lack of any of these vital fluids could cause engine failure or, at worse, an accident.

Oil and Air checks

Oil is an extremely important component to keep a car running smoothly and is a key check during any service. The engine oil and oil filter need to be changed regularly to prevent engine wear and to keep it running at maximum performance. You must use the manufacturer’s recommended oil type in your, so that the engine has a chance to reaching its’ full lifespan and allow you the top quality driving experience that your engine can give you.

Air filters also need to be checked regularly as a blocked or damaged air filter can result in a lack of power, poor fuel consumption and an unsatisfactory engine performance.

Reading of onboard auto diagnostics

Cars are so technology advanced now allowing the mechanic to connect the vehicles’ on-board engine management system to a computer in his workshop to allow him to check the current health of the car and be able to alert him to any impending issues.

Safety checks
During the routine service all aspects concerning the safety of the vehicle will need to be checked and adjusted or replaced as necessary. The braking and steering systems will need to be checked to ensure they are working fully as you need both these systems to keep the vehicle safely on the road. The lights, window wipers and screen wash systems will be checked to ensure they are all in correct working order. Seat belts and door operation will be checked and adjusted as necessary to give you the peace of mind that you will be safe in your onward journey.

If you think your car is in need of a service and are searching online, for car servicing Crayford as an example, ensure you pick a reputable mechanic as all this work should be carried out by a fully trained professional.

Car insurance – how to get a good deal

In the current economic climate many are trying to save money on everything from food shopping and fuel bills to car insurance. And looking for a better deal when it comes to insuring you car is definitely something which might save you money.

When considering switching your car insurance or when looking for a brand new one there are several things you should consider. First of all make sure you get the right cover. Define what you want your cover to be in terms of fully comprehensive versus third party and make sure you appear as low risk to the insurers as possible. Also be wary of paying monthly as this adds a lot to the total premium. Pay the full amount or use a 0% credit card to pay as this will work out cheaper. The easiest way to get lots of offers is through price comparison websites. Use several and compare their results. Then once you’ve decided on a policy investigate if you can get cash back from cash back sites. If you do, your insurance might end up a lot cheaper than you initially thought.

If your household owns more than one car it is also possible to get a multi car insurance with all cars on one policy. But make sure you check out the individual deals for the cars in question before you opt for this.

Lastly give yourself a reminder 6 weeks before your renewal date so you have time to shop around again next year.

So whether the car you want to insure is a new Toyota or a used Renault Hemel Hempstead knowing what you want and shopping around online should give you the best possible deal.
