The carbon emission fell by more than 3% in 2010 because of new cars being developed which make up more than 38% of the new car market.
The SMMT (Society of Motoring Manufacturers and Traders) 10th yearly New Car CO2 report the average emissions of new cars have contributed to the decline of pollution last year, which was a drop of 3.5% compared with 2009 and a 20% drop since 2000.
The report showed that 40% of new cars reduced their emissions to 130 grams per kilometer and below, which is the average target manufactures must meet by the 2015 deadline.
Cars that expel 0 to 130 g/km CO2 make up more than 38% of new cars available on the market in 2010, which means the decline of emissions in 2010 means the average car was producing around 144 g/km CO2 or 50 miles per gallon.
